Typical area expansion A − t isotherms from insertion assays. The isotherms are for a DPPE and DPPC monolayer initially at an A of ~ 52 and ~ 65 Å2/molecule, respectively. Time t = 0 in the isotherms corresponds to Phe injection point. ΔA indicates the Phe-induced area expansion in the steady state. By relating ΔA to A, the relative area expansion, ΔA/A, is obtained. The data are for monolayers on PBS at 37 °C
